Lifetime Fitness Project Moving Forward



Proposal Time Life Fitness' to build an upscale fitness center in the News Journal is currently built on Gannett Drive has taken a step forward.

The Westchester County Industrial Development Agency, a group that promotes business and employment development in the area, chose to enter into an agreement with Life Time Fitness last week. The agency is working with businesses to negotiate better benefits and incentives to attract them or keep them in Westchester County.


Life Time Fitness, already in an advanced stage to acquire the property, is negotiating an option of payment in lieu of tax by city / village of Harrison for work performed during the project. Negotiations, common to every large company moving into the area, will adjust the level paid by companies in the first few years after the property was purchased.

Harrison Mayor / Supervisor Ron Belmont said Monday that the negotiating process moving along and that he hoped the demolition of the property can currently take place this year.

After officially buying the property, Life Time Fitness plans to tear down the House Journal News today to build a 209 000 foot state-of-the-art square. The Harrison City Council approved the plan in November, and sales are expected to be completed this year.

"It's going full speed ahead," said Belmont.

The fitness center will include three pools, 10 tennis courts and a full-service spa. There are also plans for children's fitness center is a separate, more than 400 pieces of exercise equipment, squash courts and a two-story rock-climbing wall.

Once completed, the fitness center is expected to bring 200 jobs to the area, according to the proposed site plan in advance.

News Journal said it intends to lease space in a different location after the sale is completed.

Since the original application for this project was received in May 2011, local officials have touted the new fitness center as an attraction for the city hopes to attract business to the Platinum Mile Harrison.
